Officially One Year since I hit publish and dove headfirst into this photography journey that has proven to be unpredictable, challenging, sometimes awkward; but always authentic. I’ve experimented with different approaches, adding my own touch to the process and people I interact with, met many great people in the community and grown immensely with a sense of purpose and confidence in vulnerability, I even booked my first few gigs, and was fortunate enough to have a photo featured in a collective gallery. A perspective has been crafted looking for the overlooked. The most interesting subjects aren’t polished. They’re weathered, weird, and full of character. It’s about your ability to engage, pull, and capture some of that essence into a single frame. Beyond these flowery words I am also far from perfect and this is fully reflected in my art. Although at times it does connect, I also do enjoy the imperfections; I do my best to keep it real, never a perfect curated set of work - a nod to wabi sabi.
Street Photography is a crash course in confidence. Taking the good with the bad. Those rare, golden moments when you nail the shot - locking eyes with a stranger, exchanging a smile, and capturing something special. Versus the lows of developing two whole rolls of film only to realize… I was shooting like a nervous raccoon. Timid and in my head; missing focus, hesitating, instead of flowing. It continues to demonstrate time and time again that every time you get out there, it is always a challenge to break the mold. You really have to put yourself out there, no hiding from the frame you want, shoot loose but intentional, let the moments come to you, don’t go a hunting. Don’t be Elmer Fudd; Bugs always evades the fool. The moments are fleeting, and that’s the nature of it - some days, you’re fearless; other days you fumble through it all. But everyday, every click of the shutter, you learn. Maybe I’ve found myself taking it a little too serious at times, pressure to create and deliver content every month to my few and faithful audience… not being as loose, misplacing a curious, abundant mindset - the initial philosophy behind the Monthly 35mm.
Enough existential rambling… here’s to another year of errors, accidents, and occasionally getting it right. Please enjoy some of my favourite frames from the last month featuring a dinner party, the colourful glow of Victory Tattoo, a touch of timid street photography and some liminal space charm of Toronto’s Path.
